Nyl River Restoration Project

The Nyl River Restoration Project in Modimolle, South Africa, aims to rehabilitate a critical freshwater ecosystem threatened by pollution, invasive species, and climate change. By restoring riverbanks, improving water quality, and re-establishing ecological functions, the project will enhance biodiversity, promote climate resilience, and create green urban spaces. It integrates community participation, sustainable financing, and public-private partnerships to foster long-term impact. The initiative serves as a pilot to mobilize further investments in nature-based solutions within the Waterberg District and across South Africa.

Objectives & outcomes

  • Remove invasive species and restore native vegetation along key sections of the Nyl River
  • Improve water quality and sediment stability in a critical urban freshwater ecosystem.
  • Rehabilitate nesting and breeding grounds for endemic birds and fish species.
  • Engage local stakeholders through workshops, dialogues, and public consultations.
  • Establish public-private partnerships with mining and tourism sectors to mobilize funding and promote a biodiversity-based economy.
  • Reconnect urban planning with ecological infrastructure to enhance biodiversity near town centers.

  • Implementation & Operation (3 years): ZAR 117.61 million (EUR 5.66 million)
