Nestled in the Eastern Himalayas, a global biodiversity hotspot, the city of Gangtok hosts rich biodiversity. The city has an orchid sanctuary and lies in close proximity to five more protected areas. The city biodiversity is severely threatened by rapid urbanisation, unplanned development and dumping of solid waste.

Local Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan for the City of Gangtok

Gangtok is second city in India to have developed a scientifically informed and participatory Local Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan. The Local Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (LBSAP) for the City of Gangtok articulates the method by which to implement the vision, strategic objectives and actions necessary for conservation and protection of biodiversity in the city.
