City Biodiversity Index of Gangtok
The City Biodiversity Index of Gangtok has been developed with support from ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability, South Asia, through the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature conservation and Nuclear Safety supported Interact- Bio Project. Gangtok has scored a robust score.
The City Biodiversity Index of Gangtok shows that the city has a high presence of native species and also undertakes good governance and management of biodiversity in the city. The City Biodiversity Index will help the city mainstream biodiversity conservation into urban planning. The Index will again be re-visited after 5 years to map the progress of the city.
Gangtok is one the very few cities in India who have developed the City Biodiversity Index. This index also forms part of the Climate Smart Cities Framework 2.0 that has been launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India.
