City Biodiversity Index of Kochi
The City Biodiversity Index of Kochi has been developed with support from ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability, South Asia, through the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature conservation and Nuclear Safety supported Interact- Bio Project. Kochi has scored a robust score.
The City Biodiversity Index of Kochi shows that the city has a high presence of native species. The backwaters contribute significantly to the same. Though the city is biodiverse, it faces the challenges of urbanisation and population growth. The city has a robust mechanism for governance and management of biodiversity. The 23 indicators that have been evaluated in the City Biodiversity Index will help the city mainstream biodiversity conservation into urban planning. The Index will again be re-visited after 5 years to map the progress of the city.
Kochi is one the very few cities in India who have developed the City Biodiversity Index. This index also forms part of the Climate Smart Cities Framework 2.0 that has been launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India.
