Gangtok is second city in India to have developed a scientifically informed and participatory Local Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan.
The Local Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (LBSAP) for the City of Gangtok articulates the method by which to implement the vision, strategic objectives and actions necessary for conservation and protection of biodiversity in the city.
The city has defined its LBSAP vision as ‘a prosperous Gangtok with focus on climate-smart development while ensuring the conservation of its cultural and ecological heritage’. The city has also identified five focus areas (Maintenance of forests and ecosystem services provided by the same; Promotion of urban agriculture for urban food security; Maintenance and expansion of green spaces and avenue plantations; Conservation of water resources; Awareness raising and capacity building). This LBSAP suggests appropriate actions, comprising of both soft and hard measures to address issues faced in each of these focus areas.
